1915 - Charlie Miller  - Traditional Jazz Trombonist. Age 95

1928 - Roy Liberto  - Traditional jazz trumpeter and bandleader from New Orleans, Louisiana. He led a dixieland band that was in the same pattern as the Dukes of Dixieland. His band toured extensively. Age 82

1932 - Leroy Jenkins  - Violinist who expanded the options and range of sounds and possibilities for stringed instruments in free music. His techniques have included sawing, string bending, and plucking - Three Compositions of New Jazz. Age 78

1943 - Latelle Barton  - Blues Harp player. Age 67

1950 - Bobby McFerrin  - Multi talented jazz musician - pianist, songwriter and singer. Age 60

1970 - Terrence Higgins  - Internationally known as drummer for the Dirty Dozen Brass Band , is as well versed in the churning New Orleans funk style as any man can be. Born and raised in NOLA, Higgins has performed with everyone from Widespread Panic to Dr. John to Norah Jones, and has even gained his own set of peers in other drummers such as Brian Blade, Russell Batiste Jr., and Stanton Moore . Age 40

1897 - Joseph Rena was born on this day. Traditional jazz drummer from New Orleans, Louisiana. His teen years were spent playing with his famous brother, Kid Rena. He then performed with Wesley Don's Liberty Bell Orchestra and Kid Rena's Dixie Jazz Band. He rejoined his brother in 1940, and stayed with him until he retired from music to become an Evangelical Baptist preacher. Joseph died in New Orleans on December 26, 1973.

1903 - Lawrence Welk was born on this day. TV bandleader - "Calcutta". Welk's long-running TV variety show was a huge success in its time, and remains an enduring favorite in reruns. He died in 1992.

1919 - Mercer Ellington was born on this day. Bandleader, songwriter who had the impossible task of trying to escape from his father Duke Ellington's shadow and he never really succeeded, perhaps not trying hard enough. He died in 1996.

1942 - "Sleepy Lagoon" was recorded by Vaughn Monroe and his Orchestra for Bluebird Records on this day.

1960 - "Sketches of Spain" was completed on this day. It was a compilation of Miles Davis and Gil Evans in the Flamenco style.

1967 - The Supremes were on top of the world and the pop music charts on this day with their hit 'Love Is Here And Now You're Gone'.

1968 - "(Sittin On) the Dock of the Bay" garnered gold record status on this day. Otis redding was recognized posthumously as the record was released just after his death.

1997 - Linda 'Lady' Lacen passed away at the age of 40. She was a Jazz and Gospel vocalist.
